As our waistbands continue to grow, so does the cost of healthcare and the number of preventable diseases. Contributing to this problem is physical inactivity, which doubles the risk of America’s number one killer – heart disease. Because of that, Carilion Clinic is encouraging both employees and the public to start walking.
Walking is a great first step in adopting a healthier lifestyle and it is important to set goals in order to stay motivated. A community walk or run is a great goal to improve your health, while also supporting local groups and the community.
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), research has shown that you can gain about two hours of life for every hour of regular vigorous exercise you do. Carilion Clinic is encouraging people to sign up for the AHA’s Start! Walking program (sponsored locally by Anthem).
Carilion is providing free giveaways such as pedometers, maps and other information to help you get started. Stop by the Valley View Mall food court on Tuesday, February 9, from 7 - 9 am, noon - 2 pm, or

AÉROPOSTALE TEENS FOR JEANS
JANUARY 19 - FEBRUARY 14
This week marks the launch of Aéropostale’s 3rd Annual Teens for Jeans campaign- a denim drive aimed at raising awareness of the growing numbers of homeless teens in the US and Canada.
The Teens for Jeans campaign is one of the cornerstones of Aéropostale’s charitable efforts to benefit teens and what makes this year’s campaign so special is the opportunity for us all to think locally and act globally. The crisis in Haiti makes us painfully aware that help is needed not only in our own backyards, but in communities everywhere.
Aéropostale will match the first 100,000 jeans collected with brand new jeans. In total, 200,000 jeans will be donated to the victims of the earthquake and the balance of jeans collected will be distributed to homeless shelters here at home.
